Objectives of the Course The course aims to teach students the fundamental principles and mechanisms of operation of power electronics devices.
Course Content Power devices; BJTs, MOSFETs, SITs and IGBTs. Operation of DC Choppers. Switching mode regulators; Buck, Boost. Buck-Boost and Cuk regulators. Pulse width modulation techniques. Pulse width modulated inverters. Resonant pulse converters. Power supplies. DC drives. AC drives. Protection of devices and circuits
Course Methods and Techniques Lectures:
Conceptual Explanations: Detailed explanations of the structure, operation, and characteristics of various power devices.
Visual Aids: Use of diagrams and animations to illustrate the internal workings and switching behavior of BJTs, MOSFETs, SITs, and IGBTs.

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1 Students will be able to identify the structures, operating principles, and applications of power electronic devices such as BJTs, MOSFETs, SITs, and IGBTs.
2 Students will be able to explain the basic principles of DC choppers, their types, and control methods.
3 Students will be able to design and perform performance analysis of Buck, Boost, Buck-Boost, and Cuk regulators.
4 Students will grasp the principles of pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques and the operation of PWM inverters.
5 Students will be able to explain the operating principles and applications of resonant pulse converters and various power supplies, such as SMPS.
6 Students will be able to design DC and AC motor drive systems and apply speed and torque control methods.
7 Students will be able to implement overcurrent, overvoltage, and thermal protection methods in power electronic circuits and devices.
8 Students will be able to model and analyze power electronic circuits using simulation software and reinforce theoretical knowledge through hands-on laboratory experiments.
9 Students will understand the ethical and environmental implications of power electronics and be able to design systems that are efficient, sustainable, and ethically sound.
